Comprehensive Programs for Lasting Change
Southwest Chicago Homeless Services offers a range of programs designed to address both the immediate and long-term needs of the homeless community. From our intake and housing programs to seasonal services in winter and summer, our approach is tailored to provide both immediate relief and sustainable solutions.
Our Programs
Our intake program provides emergency responses, critical information, and referrals to individuals who are homeless, those at risk of losing their homes and to individuals needing assistance with gaining access to social services. Tailored to men and women 18 and older, we connect clients to essential community and agency services including housing options, healthcare, employment, and migrant services.
We coordinate with All-Chicago and the HMIS enrollment system for housing services and programs within Chicago. Our housing program focuses on shelter diversion by assisting with housing placements (transitional and permanent) for eligible individuals. It makes sense as studies have shown that every $1,000 spent helping a person stay out of the homeless services system saves on average $11,000 per individual in costs for shelter and services. Â We offer potential financial aid for the first month's rent or security deposits.
Our case managers assess the myriad needs of clients and find the means to help them. They work closely with clients to support them, set and achieve realistic goals for self-reliance and independence. We offer guidance and encouragement and relevant referrals to help overcome the challenges of homelessness and to better manage their lives. Goals and outcomes vary, and success is measured by each client’s achievements. Those who meet regularly with a case manager may achieve self sufficiency in a few months. For others, the process may take a year or more.
During the winter months (October-March), we provide evening drop-in services twice per week, offering dinner, showers, clothing, toiletries and a safe place for up to 35 clients and guests to escape the harsh weather. This program has been entirely volunteer-run for 30 years.
In the summer (June-August), through our partnerships with local food growers and ministries, we provide fresh vegetables to community residents. We also provide clothing, toiletries, and showers, ensuring that our clients are cared for during the warmer months.
For adults, an ID is critical. We offer Homeless Identification cards to individuals without any proof of who they are. This card is free of charge and can be used to obtain a State ID card, Entitlement Programs and benefits, and to enroll into the Homeless Management Information System database, among other things.
